E10: 4.3 Linking classes with more than total number of Aurora periods

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Preamble

Aurora College started as NSW's virtual selective school servicing rural and remote students in Stage 4 and 5. It has grown to encompass a non-selective Stage 6 cohort.

The aim is to allow students to enjoy a depth of study that was not previously available to them.

Lessons are delivered online synchronously to students in their school, by teachers in similar settings.

Info
There may be instances where the number of periods for a class is greater than the assigned number of periods for an Aurora class. When this occurs a dummy class will need to be created.

In the example below, the English class has been allocated 9 periods with Maths having 8 and Science 6. These have been linked to the Aurora Pink group like so:

To resolve this, one period needs to be removed from the linking and can be done via one of the following three ways:

Home School Line Classes

A dummy class of 8 periods can be created on the English line that is linked to the selected Aurora group:

Alert
Make sure the dummy class is given the same spread as the other classes on the line

The dummy class should now be added to the Master grid (F11) and when done so E10 will link only 8 periods of the English line with the extra period allowed to float any where else on the grid:

Home School Group Classes

When the home school classes are in groups and one or more classes have more than the required number of periods, the group with the Aurora student will be reduced to the number of Aurora periods which is then linked to the chosen Aurora group. Then a second class is created to make up the shortfall. In the example below the Maths classes for year 10 are in groups and are allocated 9 periods and the Aurora student is in 10MAT1:

After reducing the #Per column and creating a second class, Class data should look like the following:
Info
The second class has the code 10MAT.1a
Notes
Note that this will mean the students in class 10MAT1 will have two separate class codes for the subject AND you will need to assign each student from the associated group into the new class
Warning
If you have already staffed your classes you will need to staff the new class as no one has been assigned to it yet

The Maths classes can now be added to the Master grid (F11) with 8 periods linking to the chosen Aurora group and the remaining period(s) free to float any where else on the grid:

Home School Linked Group Classes

When the home school classes are in groups, linked to other subjects in the same year level and the number of periods are more than the Aurora classes, the additional periods will be split off and the extra periods accounted for using new class codes which are linked to each other. In the example below, Science has been allocated 7 periods which is 1 more than the required 6 periods for Aurora, with 10SCI1 linked to 10SCI2 and 10SCI3 linked to 10SCI4:

In this instance periods will need to be reduced for both the 10SCI1 & 10SCI2 classes and two new classes created to account for the shortfall of periods which will then be linked together:
Info
The second classes have the codes 10SCI.1a & 10SCI.2a

The Science classes can now be added to the Master grid (F11) with 6 periods linking to the chosen Aurora group and the remaining period(s) free to float any where else on the grid:

Notes

You have now successfully added all required periods to fill the Aurora complement and are ready to move onto creating your Science practical lessons
